Stockbridge sage: NMU alumnus mixes math and physical education | News, Sports, Jobs

STOCKBRIDGE – Susan (Gilbert) Lockhart, an NMU alumnus, a middle and high school math and physical education teacher at Community Schools in Lower Stockbridge State, is the subject of a recent newsletter from information to effectively channel his passion for fitness for the academic benefit of students.

Lockhart taught in the Stockbridge School District for 16 years.

Lockhart said his former cross-country coach, who also taught math, was the most influential person in his life and inspired his career choice.

After receiving her bachelor’s degree from NMU in 2004, she moved to the upstate and earned a master’s degree from Marygrove College.

Here is his advice for students, as highlighted in the Stockbridge Community News article:

“Everything doesn’t have to go according to plan for it to be perfect. You have the power to overcome any situation in life and that starts with having a positive attitude and believing that you can do it. You are not judged by the situations you encounter in life, but by how you react to those situations.

This wise advice is something that she helps her students to live up to every chance she has.

According to the article, Lockhart will “extra mile” as a math teacher to help struggling students, and often gives their own time to help a student master a math concept or prepare for an assignment or test.

Lockhart has been cited as citing studies indicating that maintaining a healthy body can help students focus in class, become better teachers, and improve overall performance in the classroom, leading to better grades, Higher test scores, reduced absences and better memory.

Lockhart and her husband, Derek, and their children, Taylor and Evan, live in the Stockbridge area where Derek grew up and where his family resides.

However, Lockhart said his young daughter has already expressed interest in going up North.
