People’s University Launches New Series: “Physical Science and the Joy of Discovery” | News, Sports, Jobs
WHEELING – The Ohio County Public Library, in partnership with the Wheeling Academy of Law & Science Foundation (WALS), will offer the 31st entry in its People’s University series as a six-class live online presentation .
“Physical science, the joy of discovery” will take participants on a journey through the philosophical and intellectual development of science as a method to accurately assess evidence, eliminate bias, find facts and acquire knowledge.
The opening classes in the series will explore, in part, the following themes: science is not politics; science is not magic; science is not faith or belief; science is not based on feelings; it is not a conspiracy and has no hidden agenda. Science is the serious pursuit of what is true in terms of the best available and logically generated evidence. Science recognizes that it is okay to be wrong and to learn from it.
Later courses in the series will explore the history and fundamental building blocks of the pillars of physical science: chemistry and physics. Participants will learn what matter and energy are and what laws they obey. Further work will explore specific applications of chemistry, namely laser technology as well as the fight against multidrug resistant bacteria through drug discovery.
Participants who “like”, comment or ask a question will be eligible to win a door prize at each session.
All classes meet on Thursday evening at 6.30 p.m.
The first course will take place on Thursday, January 14, with the component of week 1, “The Philosophy of Science”.
Instructor Mary Ellen Cassidy will ask and explore answers to questions such as “What is science and who cares?” “Why is science revered or rejected? “” What is the role of science in the decision-making of society and in its search for equity?
Cassidy’s professional experience includes teaching and research in the areas of chemistry, statistics, algebra, and environmental sciences. Her community background includes the Director of the Appalachian Institute, the New Energy Saving Coordinator at WALS, the Coordinator of Wheeling Solar Co-op, the Board Member of Solar United Neighbors of West Virginia and the Member of the Energy Efficient West Virginia Steering Committee. She is currently enjoying her work as a math and science teacher at the Academic Support Center at West Virginia Northern Community College.
