JOHANNESBURG – The Department of Basic Education (DBE) announced on Saturday that there will be no rewriting of the Matrix exams in Maths Paper 2 and Physical Science Paper 2.

In a statement, the Education Council said it agreed that the matrix class of 2020 had faced many challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and that it would be unfair to subject them to further uncertainties. .

The council, however, said it was concerned the court ruling did not address the credibility, fairness and integrity of matrix reviews, due to the leaked documents.

DBE spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga said: “The rewrite of Maths Paper 2 and Physics Paper 2, which were scheduled for December 15 and 17, respectively, is not proceeding as originally announced by the Ministry of Education. basic. The Council of Education Ministers took note of the judgment of the High Court of North Gauteng, which was handed down on Friday afternoon. CEM noted that a number of aspects of the judgment need to be challenged and that in the near future it will apply to the courts to correct some of the identified aspects of the decision.

Earlier on Saturday, the Democratic Union of Teachers of South Africa (Sadtu) said the quality assurance body Umalusi must comply with the Pretoria High Court ruling and declare the National Senior’s exams credible. Certificate (NSC).

Meanwhile, the Basic Education Ministry said next week’s proposed rewrite of the leaked math and physical science exams was not on the table.

The department said it will now focus on the next phase of exam administration, including final preparations for large-scale scoring.
