RESTON, Va., February 5, 2021 – Donovan Leonard, a researcher in the Deposits Science and Technology group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), has been elected to a three-year term as director of physical sciences at the Microscopy Society of America (MSA).

Leonard’s research at ORNL focused on the combination of advanced electron microscopy and microanalysis with machine learning and additive manufacturing microstructure control to enable predictive insight into the properties of materials produced during manufacturing. manufacture by fusion of electrons and laser powder beds.

He has also been active in developing educational outreach programs related to STEM that emphasize the use of microscopy to explore the world. These outreach efforts led to the installation of an electron microscope allowing students to gain hands-on experience while visiting ORNL’s traveling science exhibition.

Leonard has been involved with the MSA since 1998 and has held a variety of positions including Chairman of the Education Outreach Committee. He is also director of the Microanalysis Society, a sister society of the MSA.
